CODA Oscars were big wins for the D/deaf community

CODA is the story of a Deaf family with a fishing business in Massachusetts. It’s a simple story about family life that’s beautifully told.

The film has three Deaf actors – Daniel Durant, Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin, who won a Best Actress Oscar for Children of a Lesser God in 1987. CODA was acquired by Apple TV+ for a record-breaking $25 million so the streaming service could launch the film at the same time it was hitting theaters.

CODA had already won more than 50 awards, so it was no surprise the movie was nominated for three Academy Awards. For those who have seen the movie, it was also no surprise when CODA won all three Oscars: Best Movie, Best Adapted Screenplay for writer-director Siân Heder and Best Actor for Troy Kotsur.

Oscars night was big for the D/deaf community. Now if we could just get them to provide ASL interpreters for the entire show, not just when CODA was winning all those awards…
