Celebrate the holidays with movies featuring Deaf characters

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

Over the past couple of years it has been hard to find things to celebrate in the midst of the pandemic. But one thing that’s worth celebrating is the increased representation of Deaf characters and Deaf actors in movies, both in theaters and on streaming services.

IMDb, the Internet Movie Database, lists 75 movies with Deaf characters – and that doesn’t include four movies released in the past two years: A Quiet Place Part II, CODA, Marvel’s Eternals and the Academy Award-winning The Sound of Metal. You might be surprised to learn that the oldest movie on the IMBd list was 1926’s You’d Be Surprised.

Opinions about how the movies portray Deaf characters vary widely within the d/Deaf community. As the nights grow longer and colder, one way to find out for yourself is to rent or stream some of the movies.
